My Partner is Pressuring Me to Have an Abortion, But I’m Not Sure

It can be difficult to stick to a pregnancy decision when others are pressuring you. You may feel your friends and family won’t adequately support you, or you will lose loved ones due to your choice. But your well-being is the priority, and no one has the right to decide for you.

If you have an unplanned pregnancy but lack support from loved ones, there is a place for you here. We offer unbiased information on your pregnancy options in a compassionate environment.

Evaluating Your Situation

Know that a forced abortion is illegal, and your partner cannot make this pregnancy decision. You may welcome their viewpoint and advice if you are in a safe, stable relationship. But the decision is ultimately yours as the pregnant woman.

Sometimes, a partner pressures you to make a pregnancy decision because they’re scared or uncertain about the future. But in other cases, it can be because they are abusive.

You are not obligated to stay with an abusive partner, take their advice, or accept their mistreatment of you. Abuse often increases during pregnancy if a partner believes you are more vulnerable or fears the extra responsibility a child brings.

If your partner is abusive, speak to a trusted loved one about your situation and create an emergency plan. You can also contact the National Domestic Violence Hotline for 24/7 support, resources, and more. You deserve safety.

If your partner isn’t abusive but is instead pressuring you out of fear, it is often helpful to listen to their concerns. You aren’t responsible for their feelings but may be able to address any worries.

Attending an appointment at Life Light Pregnancy Help Center may also be beneficial; our peer counselors will provide options information and answer any questions. You may also be eligible for an ultrasound from our mobile unit with a positive pregnancy test at the center.

While you and your partner may not see eye-to-eye, you could find common ground. Ultimately, if you conceived this pregnancy together, your partner must at least provide financial support if you choose parenting. Learning about their legal and financial obligations is crucial.
