When Can You Take a Pregnancy Test?

Pregnancy tests look for human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), a hormone your body begins producing after a fertilized egg implants in the uterus. During early pregnancy, hCG levels rise quickly, making it easier for a pregnancy test to detect the hormone as time passes.

Some home pregnancy tests claim they can detect pregnancy before your missed period. However, testing too early increases the chance of a false-negative result because there may not yet be enough hCG in your urine for the test to detect.

For a more reliable result, Mayo Clinic recommends taking a home pregnancy test after the first day of your missed period. Waiting another day or two can give hCG more time to rise if you are pregnant.

If your periods are irregular, figuring out when to test can be more difficult because you may not know exactly when your period was supposed to arrive. Testing four weeks after you have had sex in this case is recommended.

How to Use a Pregnancy Test Accurately

When you are anxious for an answer, it can be tempting to rush through the instructions. But a few simple details can affect your result.

Before testing:

  • Check the expiration date. An expired test may not work properly.
  • Follow the instructions carefully. Different tests may have different testing and reading times.
  • Use your first-morning urine when possible. Urine is more concentrated after you wake up, which can make hCG easier to detect.
  • Wait the full amount of time listed in the instructions. Reading the test too early can give you an inaccurate interpretation.
  • Pay attention to the control indicator. If the test does not show the expected control line or symbol, it may not have worked properly.

If you receive a negative result but your period still does not come, you may want to test again after a few days or speak with a healthcare professional. A negative result does not always mean you are not pregnant, particularly when the test was taken early.

Why an Ultrasound Is the Next Step

A positive test confirms that your body is producing hCG, but that small result leaves several important pieces of the picture unknown. It does not show how far along you are, whether the pregnancy is continuing to develop, or where the pregnancy has implanted.

An ultrasound can help answer those questions. It may show that a pregnancy has already ended in miscarriage. Or the scan may reveal findings that raise concern for an ectopic pregnancy, which develops outside the uterus and can become a medical emergency without immediate treatment.

Having this information gives you a more complete picture of your pregnancy and can help you understand what to do next.
