If you’re considering adoption after finding out you are unexpectedly pregnant, you might be wondering what your relationship with your child could look like and whether you will be able to stay in contact.
Adoption now allows you to choose what type of relationship you would like to have with your child and have more control throughout the adoptive process. You can make a written agreement where you have ongoing contact with your child if you wish to do so.
Life Light Pregnancy Center offers free pregnancy tests and ultrasound referrals to help you better understand your pregnancy. We can also give you accurate information about adoption and your other options.

How Adoption Works in California
Adoption is a legal process that permanently establishes the adoptive parent or parents as the child’s legal parents. California adoptions may be completed through an adoption agency or through an independent adoption.
You can make an adoption plan based on your preferences and the relationship you would like to have with your child. When considering adoptive families, you will be able to review family profiles, ask questions, and choose a family that aligns with your values and hopes for your child.
Adoption agencies may also provide counseling and support throughout the process. At Life Light Pregnancy Center, we can discuss whether or not adoption may be right for you and can offer referrals to professionally licensed, reputable adoption organizations.
The Different Adoption Plans
There are three different types of adoption plans, and the amount and type of relationship you may have with your child can vary.
- Open adoption – This involves ongoing communication, updates, or visits between the birth family and the child.
- Semi-open adoption – This involves communication through an adoption agency or another agreed-upon method, often without sharing identifying information.
- Closed adoption – Generally involves no ongoing contact between the birth family and adoptive family, with identifying information kept private.
In California, a Contact After Adoption Agreement can describe what type of ongoing contact is permitted between the birth family and child. The agreement can be filed with the court as part of the adoption process.
When Parenting Might Be an Alternative
If you are considering adoption because you feel unprepared to parent, it may also be helpful to learn what support could be available if you do choose to raise your child.
Concerns about finances, housing, education, childcare, or preparing for a baby can feel overwhelming. Depending on your circumstances, community resources may be available to help with some of these needs.
At Life Light Pregnancy Help Center, we can offer material support with our “Life Light Loot” in exchange for every parenting lesson you complete. You can get diapers and wipes, baby and young toddler clothes (up to size 2), toys, strollers, and more.
We also provide free parenting lessons, and California offers many resources for single mothers, such as medical care and housing assistance.
Taking time to learn about parenting support does not mean you have to choose parenting. It simply allows you to compare your options and make an informed decision about the type of relationship you want to have with your child.
