What is the Abortion Pill?

Asking questions about the abortion pill before making a pregnancy decision is a wise step to take. Being proactive and researching your pregnancy options helps you prioritize your well-being.

There’s a lot of information out there about the abortion pill, and you need answers you can trust during this critical time. Life Light Pregnancy Help Center provides free and confidential peer counseling services to help you learn about all three options.

How Does the Abortion Pill Work?

Medical abortion, or the “abortion pill,” uses drugs to end an early pregnancy. Mifepristone, the first drug, blocks the hormone progesterone. This action thins the uterine lining and prevents the embryo from remaining implanted and growing.

The second drug, misoprostol, causes uterine contractions that expel the embryo and related tissues from the body. With abortion pill drugs, you’ll always experience some degree of abdominal cramping and vaginal bleeding.

Mifepristone is FDA-approved through 10 weeks gestation. Taking this drug past the recommended gestational age or purchasing the abortion pill online is not advised. These actions could increase the chances of developing a risk.

Potential side effects of abortion drugs include:

  • Headache
  • Diarrhea
  • Fever
  • Chills
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting

Developing a risk is rare, but it may happen. It’s essential to be aware of the following:

  • Infection
  • Fever
  • Digestive system discomfort
  • Incomplete abortion (which may require surgical treatment)
  • An ongoing pregnancy (if the drugs don’t work)
