Did you know experts estimate that over one in four pregnancies ends in a natural miscarriage? Only an ultrasound can determine if your pregnancy is growing or if you have miscarried.
What Is An Ultrasound?
An ultrasound scan uses high-frequency sound waves to capture images inside your body. You can’t hear the sound waves, but you can see an image on the computer screen.
Why Do I Need An Ultrasound?
You would think a late period and a positive pregnancy test would be all you need to determine if you’re pregnant. But it may not be. We recommend getting a limited obstetrical ultrasound for critical information about your pregnancy. The results could determine your options. We can provide you with a referral for a free limited ultrasound.
An ultrasound answers three important questions:
1. Is My Pregnancy Growing?
Experts estimate that 26% of all pregnancies end in a natural miscarriage, and 80% of those occur in the first 12 weeks. An ultrasound determines if your pregnancy is growing or if you have miscarried.
Because it takes your body time to return to pre-pregnancy hormone levels, it is still possible to get a positive pregnancy test days or even weeks after a miscarriage. This is known as a false-positive test result.
2. Where Is My Pregnancy Located?
Although that seems like an odd question, some pregnancies begin abnormally growing in the wrong place. A pregnancy that grows outside the uterus is known as an ectopic pregnancy. It can be extremely dangerous for a pregnancy to continue to grow in a different location. In fact, the condition can be life-threatening.
3. How Far Along Am I?
If you are considering abortion, especially the abortion pill method, it’s critical to know how far along you are in your pregnancy. The FDA has approved the use of these abortion drugs through 10 weeks of pregnancy only.
An ultrasound determines the gestational age (how many weeks you have been pregnant).
