The short answer is that yes, it is possible to “reverse” the effects of the abortion pill with a protocol called Abortion Pill Reversal. APR offers an opportunity to continue your pregnancy if you’ve taken mifepristone and regret your decision.
Timing matters with APR, so it’s critical to act quickly. We’ll help you understand how the process works and where to find a provider.
Keep reading to learn more about this protocol. You can also contact the Abortion Pill Rescue Network for 24/7 support and help locating assistance in your area.
How Does APR Work?
First, it’s important to understand how medical abortion ends a pregnancy. Two drugs are used during the process: mifepristone and misoprostol.
Mifepristone blocks progesterone, a hormone that aids the pregnancy’s growth and development. Without this hormone, the pregnancy detaches from the uterine lining and ends.
Misoprostol is taken afterward. This drug causes the uterus to contract, which expels the pregnancy from the body.
With APR, a provider administers doses of progesterone orally, vaginally, or by injection. Progesterone has been used to reduce miscarriage rates and help pregnancies develop for over 50 years. Administering this hormone can potentially outnumber and outcompete the effects of mifepristone and allow the pregnancy to continue.
The APR protocol is most effective when started 24-72 hours after taking mifepristone. The sooner it’s begun, the higher the success rate.
Is APR Safe?
Progesterone isn’t known to cause complications like birth defects, making it an ideal method for potentially continuing a pregnancy. What’s more, that same study found that APR was successful in 64-68% of cases.
However, it’s crucial to know that APR won’t be successful if misoprostol has already been taken. If you’ve only taken mifepristone and are having second thoughts, timing is everything. It may not be too late to continue your pregnancy.
We know this situation can feel overwhelming, but you’re not alone. Help is available.
