What Can Ultrasound Detect?

Before making a pregnancy decision or moving forward, you should receive an obstetric ultrasound to get the facts. Ultrasound is a diagnostic tool that produces pictures of your body’s internal structures. It can confirm valuable details about your pregnancy and health.

Life Light Pregnancy Help Center refers to ultrasounds on a visiting mobile unit. After you are tested (or re-tested) for pregnancy, you can receive a limited ultrasound and take steps to protect your well-being.

How is Ultrasound Helpful?

An ultrasound uses sound waves emitted from a transducer (a small, handheld device) to produce images on a screen.

You may have a transvaginal ultrasound if you are early in your pregnancy. With this ultrasound, a transducer is placed gently into your vagina to create the clearest image of your pregnancy.

If you are further along, you will have an abdominal ultrasound. During this type of scan, a gel is applied to your abdomen, and the transducer will be guided over it.

What You’ll Learn

Most people have two ultrasounds during pregnancy, the second being an anatomy scan. You’ll learn the baby’s gender, and the sonographer or nurse will take measurements and conduct a more in-depth look at this time.

However, you’ll learn the following during an initial ultrasound to confirm your pregnancy.

1. Whether your pregnancy is progressing

You’ll learn whether your pregnancy is progressing and has a heartbeat. This is often referred to as its viability.

As many as 26% of all pregnancies end in miscarriage, so it’s crucial to determine whether you have had one and need monitoring or treatment.

2. Where your pregnancy is located

Typically, pregnancies are located in the uterus. However, some women experience an ectopic pregnancy, which occurs when the fertilized egg implants in a location like the cervix or a fallopian tube.

Ectopic pregnancies are dangerous if left untreated and cannot survive. An ultrasound can determine your pregnancy’s location and if you need medical attention.

3. How far along you are

Knowing your gestational age (or how far along you are) is crucial. It can help determine your pregnancy options, identify a due date (if you are planning to choose adoption or parenting), and more.
