Why Should I Choose to Place My Child for Adoption?

Facing an unexpected pregnancy can cause many questions to surface. If you’re feeling uncertain about parenting and don’t wish to have an abortion, you may be wondering if there’s another path forward—one that offers hope and peace of mind.

Abortion isn’t without its physical and emotional risks. Additionally, some women experience sadness, grief, feelings of loss, or other mental health effects after the procedure. If you’ve decided that abortion isn’t right for you but don’t feel ready to become a parent, adoption may be the loving option you’re looking for.

At Life Light, we understand how overwhelming this decision can feel, and we’re here to help you explore every option. Continue reading to learn why you might consider choosing adoption for your child.

Understanding the Adoption Option

Choosing adoption doesn’t mean “giving up” your child—it means giving them a life filled with opportunity. Adoption can provide peace in the midst of uncertainty, especially if parenting does not feel like the best option. Though making this decision can feel challenging, be assured that you are supported every step of the way and will have your needs prioritized.

Modern adoption offers you choices and control. As the birth mother, you decide how involved you want to be. You can select the adoptive family, decide how much contact you’d like to have in the future, and create a plan that reflects your values and comfort level.

Adoption plans typically fall into three categories:

  • Open adoption allows for direct communication between you, the adoptive family, and your child, including letters, photos, or visits.
  • Semi-open adoption provides some updates and communication through a third party, such as an agency or attorney. Limited information, like first names, may be exchanged.
  • Closed adoption keeps all identifying information private. You and the adoptive family will remain anonymous.

Choosing adoption can allow you to form relationships on your terms, helping you further your goals while building meaningful connections. What’s more, you don’t need to determine your next steps alone.

Support at Every Step

Placing your child for adoption does not mean you’ll incur a heavy financial burden. Adoption-related expenses will be taken care of, and your medical costs will be covered if not done so by insurance. You may also receive material and emotional support throughout the process, helping you feel prepared and encouraged every step of the way.

Adoption isn’t the right path for everyone, and it’s okay if you’re still unsure. That’s why we offer a safe space to ask questions, speak with compassionate advocates, and learn about agencies that have your best interests in mind.

While Life Light does not facilitate adoptions, we work closely with trusted agencies that can guide you through the process. This decision is entirely yours, but you don’t have to make it alone.
